Three Cockle Shells
Atlantic receding leaving cockle shells behind, Folly Beach, SC. The Atlantic Cockle is a very prevalent clam along the Atlantic coast. Numerous empty shells are found along the beaches, especially as the tide recedes. The empty shells found along the beaches are the result of predators, especially the univalve snail, the Channeled Welk.
This bivalve is a popular edible shellfish, used to make an excellent chowder.
